DIVIDE AND CONQUER
"Fuzzy math" isn't only for politicians—it seems to be the standard in the food industry for determining sugar quantities, too. "Measuring sugar in grams rather than teaspoons makes it confusing for the consumer to visualize how much he or she is taking in," says Dallas-based gym owner and weight-loss expert Larry North. To convert grams into tea spoons and figure out just how sweet your food is, divide by four, he says. That means a 12-ounce can of soda with 40 grams of sugar has ten teaspoons of the sweet stuff. (North points out that if you drink two sodas a day, that works out to almost half a pound of sugar by week's end!) And it's not just your thighs that will bear the burden of all that sugar— imagine what it's doing to your pearly whites.—V.P.
